Varahi media.com online news,National, May 28, 2025: IndiGo has announced that Mr. Ton Dortmans will join the airline in mid-August 2025 to play a pivotal role in enhancing the company’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities. He will also spearhead the technical entry into service of IndiGo’s upcoming Airbus A350 aircraft.
With an illustrious career spanning 40 years at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines—including 13 years as Executive Vice President of KLM Engineering & Maintenance—Ton brings a wealth of experience to IndiGo’s growing operations.
As part of IndiGo’s strategic vision, “Towards New Heights and Across New Frontiers,” launched in mid-2022, the airline placed significant orders for wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft, slated for delivery starting in 2027. This move signals a major step for IndiGo as it expands into long-haul operations with Rolls-Royce powered A350s, marking its entry into a new chapter of technical expertise and operational scale.

Given IndiGo’s rapidly expanding fleet—already exceeding 400 aircraft and with over 900 additional aircraft on order—the airline is focused on building in-house MRO capabilities within India. This includes expanding infrastructure, such as the recent opening of IndiGo’s second hangar in Bengaluru in 2023.

Ton Dortmans will report to Mr. Isidro Porqueras, Chief Operating Officer of IndiGo, and work closely with Mr. Parichay Dutta, SVP Engineering, to strengthen IndiGo’s technical operations. This strategic appointment aligns with IndiGo’s plans to grow its presence globally, including the opening of a European office in Amsterdam. IndiGo’s first flights to Manchester and Amsterdam are set to commence in July 2025.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, expressed his enthusiasm, saying,
“Ton brings an exceptional level of expertise in MRO and wide-body operations, which will greatly benefit IndiGo as we embark on this exciting new chapter. His decision to join IndiGo after his distinguished KLM career is a testament to the potential and ambition of our airline. The opportunity to develop world-class MRO capabilities in India, supported by our growing team of talented professionals, is one we couldn’t miss.”
This move underscores IndiGo’s commitment to evolving into a global aviation leader, with a robust operational backbone and enhanced MRO capabilities to support its expanding fleet and international reach.
