Leopard Spotted on Alipiri Walkway in Tirupati, Sparks Fear Among Devotees

Varahi media.com online news,Tirupati, March 4th,2025: Devotees and shopkeepers near the Alipiri walkway in Tirupati were gripped with fear after a leopard was spotted early Tuesday. The wild animal was captured on CCTV footage near Galigupuram around 1 AM, prompting immediate alerts to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) officials.

Following the sighting, TTD officials urged devotees to walk in groups and restricted children under 12 from using the route as a precaution. This comes just two weeks after another leopard was seen near Muggu Bavi, though it retreated into the forest. Security personnel had been ensuring the safety of devotees along the path.

In response to the latest sighting, TTD and the Forest Department have ramped up security measures along the 9-km-long Alipiri walkway, which has 3,550 steps leading to the Sri Venkateshwara temple atop Tirumala hills.

Frequent leopard sightings have raised concerns in recent months. In January, a leopard was seen near Alipiri, causing panic among residents and pilgrims. A TTD hospital employee was injured when he fell off his bike after encountering a leopard on the Alipiri-Cherlopalli road.

Tragically, a six-year-old girl lost her life on August 11, 2023, when a leopard attacked her while she was trekking to Tirumala with her parents. Her body was discovered near Narasimha Swamy temple the following morning. In another incident, a three-year-old boy narrowly escaped when a wild cat attempted to drag him into the forest, but devotees and security personnel managed to chase it away.

To enhance safety, TTD and the Forest Department have increased surveillance, restricted movement at certain hours, and installed CCTV cameras. Over the past few months, officials have successfully captured four leopards by setting up cages along the walkway.
