Varahi Media.com online news,Hyderabad, 13 August 2024: Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), a premier government hospital in Hyderabad, proudly announced that it has successfully completed 300 robotic-assisted surgeries (RAS) within a year of installing the advanced Da Vinci surgical robot. These surgeries span complex procedures in Urology, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. With this achievement, NIMS has positioned itself as one of the fastest government hospitals in India to reach this milestone.

Dr. Bheerappa Nagari, Director of NIMS Hyderabad, commented on this achievement, stating, “Robotic surgery is a transformative technology that is enhancing clinical outcomes globally and now in India. Our mission is to deliver the highest standard of care to all our patients. The availability of cutting-edge technology in India allows us to extend these benefits to patients from all backgrounds. We are deeply grateful to the Chief Minister of Telangana, Mr. Revanth Reddy, and the Minister for Health, Medical & Family Welfare, Science and Technology, Mr. Damodar Rajanarasimha, for their unwavering support in providing this advanced treatment option to all segments of society.”

Dr. Nagari further highlighted that the technology has significantly reduced post-operative hospital stays, enabling doctors to handle more cases daily and shortening surgery wait times from months to mere days. “Patients are now increasingly opting for robotic-assisted surgery, thanks to positive word-of-mouth from those who have undergone the procedure,” he added.

Dr. Rahul Devraj, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Coordinator for Robotic Surgery at NIMS-Hyderabad, emphasized the importance of government support in making this modern surgical technique accessible to all. “Robotic-assisted surgery marks a significant advancement in the field. We are proud to offer such state-of-the-art services at NIMS. This technology allows us to address complex anatomical and tumor-related challenges with greater precision, providing a viable alternative to traditional techniques. Our patients experience less pain and quicker recovery, with excellent long-term outcomes,” said Dr. Devraj.

Ms. Darla Hutton, Interim GM-India and VP of Commercial Operations – APAC for Intuitive, the makers of the Da Vinci RAS technology, praised the collaboration with NIMS. “The integration of the Da Vinci system at NIMS is a pivotal step in promoting robotic-assisted surgery among current and future surgeons. We are thrilled to see that NIMS is making this technology accessible to all, reducing surgery wait times at a bustling government hospital. This partnership also ensures that the next generation of surgeons is well-trained in the latest technology, fostering innovation in surgical practices.”

Robotic-assisted surgery, a minimally invasive procedure, enables patients to resume their normal lives faster. Surgeons use the Da Vinci system to operate through small incisions, aided by a 3D high-definition vision system and wristed instruments that offer greater precision and control than the human hand. The benefits include reduced pain, fewer post-operative infections, less scarring, and faster recovery, making it an ideal option for patients with co-morbidities.

The wide range of procedures performed using robotic assistance at NIMS includes prostate cancer surgeries, nephrectomies, radical cystectomies, various hernia repairs, fundoplications, and complex gastrointestinal and gynecological surgeries.
