It is believed that this temple was discovered by Adisankaracharya. This temple is situated at a height of 3680 meters. The biggest feature of this temple is its location in the middle of a great mountain range.

According to legend, the third brother of the Pandavas, Arjuna, laid the foundation of this temple. Apart from this, this temple is also believed to be the place where Lord Rama did penance to get rid of the curse of Brahmahatya for killing Ravana.

This temple is open only for a few months. Usually during summer the doors of this temple are open for devotees. The doors of this temple remain closed till the end of October. In winter the temple is covered with snow.

The month of Sawan has started from July 4 this year. Devotees offer prayers to Lord Shiva during this holy month. Devotees fast every Monday during the month of Sawan. Devotees believe that if they fast, their wishes will be fulfilled.
