Rutgers University researchers analyzed 31,339,991 pregnant women who gave birth between 2010 and 2018. Among them, those who did not receive treatment for infertility were also analyzed. found that 66 percent of infertility treatment cases had an increased risk of stroke, despite fewer hospitalizations.
They are twice as likely to suffer a fatal stroke, a hemorrhagic stroke. Moreover, there is a 55 percent higher chance of suffering from an ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke, most commonly caused by loss of blood supply to an area of the brain.
However, hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain from rupture of blood vessels. Notably, an increased risk was also evident in the first 30 days after delivery.

The study comes as treatment for infertility has accelerated with the development of new drugs and significant advances in technology in recent years. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women.
One in three people die each year from CVD. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in both men and women. Studies show that 1 in every 5 women is at risk of having a stroke in her lifetime. Evidence suggests that many people are unaware of health factors that put them at risk for stroke or other CVD.
The reasons behind this could not be ascertained in the study. The researchers said this may be due to hormone treatments taken by women undergoing the procedures. Also, the researchers revealed that women who do not have a properly attached placenta are at higher risk.
